Ansi van der Walt MScPhysio

Senior Physiotherapist

Ansi qualified as a physiotherapist (BPhys) from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2001. For the next two years she worked in a practice specialising in the treatment of patients with back and neck pain, where therapeutic exercise was also a prominent part of treatment. During this period, she worked part time for an animal physiotherapy practice.

In 2004, Ansi started her own practice treating horses, domestic pets and horse riders. She now treats some of the country’s top equestrian, equine and canine athletes.

In 2007, Ansi obtained her MSc in Physiotherapy from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, for her research into canine cruciate ligament injuries.

On 6 January 2015, Maximus was diagnosed with fairly advanced spondylosis. When I heard the results, I was shattered, I thought the worse, I thought by boy would never be able to do any work at all ever again and if anyone knows Maximus, he lives to work. Maximus is a very active Siberian Husky who loves agility, sledding and obedience. The specialist vet recommended us to do physiotherapy and that is how I met Ansi, the day our life changed. Before Maximus was diagnosed with spondylosis, Maximus used to sled but not give his heart into sledding and obviously it was because he was not strong enough due to the spondylosis. With weekly physio for the last year and a half, Maximus’ core muscles gradually became strong enough to support his spine. My boy now does agility non-contact, tunnelling and jumps at 40cm and sleds like he has never before. Maximus is also quite straight in the shoulder, so with physio building the shoulder muscles to be able to not put strain in his stride when he sleds. Accupuncture and massaging has helped a lot when Maximus is in pain due to overstraining while crazy husky playing. My boy is rock solid now.

If I can sum it up in one sentence, Physio has given Maximus a brand new life.

I would highly recommend physio for any dog that suffers from joint problems, weak/sore muscles and incorrect structure. Physio helps build muscles while reducing the pain.
